Rob's take on commenting

Mon Jan 26, 2004, 4:08 PM
It’s no surprise to anyone who has been on deviantART for a little while that everyone loves to receive comments. That being said, it’s also pretty easy for an artist to accept a comment, but I think it’s even harder for some of us to leave comments.

It doesn’t take long for anyone to find what seems to of become the typical comment. “Hey cool <insert type of art here> !” While it feels good to know that someone likes your art these comments have become too typical, and really don’t give the artist an idea on how to approve. I’m not to lie, and pretend that I have always posted good comments, I too fell into this trend.

However, now is the time to break out of that trend. I have already started to improve the manner in which I comment, and I felt that I should share it here.

:bulletblue: Comment on art you know or have an interest/opinion on. Most people have heard the phrase “Comment in order to receive comments.” This phrase has truth, but it’s key to comment on art that you like. If you don’t have an interest in skins, then stay way from commenting on those deviations. For two reasons
:pointr: The validity of your comment. Comments can sometimes mean more coming from someone who does the same type of art.
:pointr: The validity of their comment. If you are hopping they will re-comment on your work, the chance is their comment might not be as good since they also make a different type of art.
:bulletblue: Be Honest. While it is important to be polite, there is no reason to lie to anyone. If you don’t like the work, don’t comment on it.
:bulletblue: Be polite. Remember what your mom always said, if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say it at all.
:bulletblue: Be constructive. Give a pointer, or a tip on what you think could make the art better. If you would rather see it from this angle, or a different word here, say so. But do so in a polite way.

For me, these suggestions have really help developed the way in which I comment. I have noticed more positive and better comments on even my own art work. Hope someone finds these suggestions as helpful as I have. Have a great day, and happy commenting!
